Names of the Week: Olivia and Liam

Hello everyone! It's time for names of the week again! I thought about featuring Noah and Emma, the #1 names in the U.S. in 2014, but I figued that they get plenty of time in the spotlight. I decided I'd feature the #2 names instead. Obviously, these names are well loved and although they're too popular for me to want to use, they are both lovely names.

Olivia
Latin
"olive tree"
Ranked #2 in 2014

Olivia fits right in with the flowy, princessy names that are very popular right now. Sophia and Isabella have both been #1 in recent years and Olivia follows a similar pattern: three syllables and ends in an a. Emma is currently the #1 name in the U.S. but I did the math and I believe Olivia will be on top in 2015. When you look at number of births, Olivia is rising in popularity and Emma falling. While Olivia is certainly the most popular it's ever been, it's hardly ever dropped out of the top 500 in the last 115 years, giving it a more timeless feel. I like Olivia for its spunky, vivacious sound. It also has some great nicknme options like Liv, Livy, and Via. If you're looking for a unisex nickname, there's also Ollie.

Liam
Irish short form of William
"resolute protector"
Ranked #2 in 2014

Liam is handsome nickname for William that has overtaken the original name in popularity. William is not far behind at #5. I think Olivia will overtake Emma as the #1 girls name in 2015 and though some may disagree with me, I don't think there's much chance of Liam overtaking Noah anytime soon. When you look at the number of babies given the name Liam, you can see that it is still rising in popularity, but not nearly as fast as Noah. Plus, the top name for boys doesn't tend to fluctuate the way that the top girls name would. William is the epitome of a classic name but using Liam as a given name is a more recent development, at least in the U.S. The first time Liam appeared in the top 1000 was in 1967 and it didn't appear consistently until 1974. If you like Liam but you're afraid it will sound too trendy in years to come, you could always choose William with the nickname Liam. Overall, as a nickname or as a given name, Liam is very cute and I give it two thumbs up!

My overall favorite combos for Olivia and Liam are Olivia Dove and Liam Isaiah.
