Names of the Week: Rey and Finn

Hello everyone! I hope you're having a great year so far! My husband and I may be the last people on earth to see the new Star Wars movie but we finally did and I wanted to feature the names of the main characters as my names of the week!

Rey
Spanish
"King"
Not ranked in the top 1000 in 2014 (for girls)

Rey is the name of the new Star Wars protagonist and without sharing any spoilers, I can say that she is brave, determined and fiercely loyal. So far, I think she makes a great role model for a young girl. Rey was an interesting name choice for this character. The meaning is decidedly masculine but its sound is not overly masculine. I think it fits the character well. While I'm not generally into unisex names, Rey on a little girl sounds pretty cute, especially for a family that loves Star Wars. Rey would also work well in the middle name spot.

Finn
Irish
"fair"
Ranked #234 in 2014

Finn is a name that is already pretty popular and on the rise. Some have speculated that this movie will do for Finn what the original movies did for Luke. It took more than a decade to get Anakin into the top 1000, though. It found a spot on the list for the first time in 2014. Finley is currently more popular for girls than for boys but I think the boys still have a solid hold on Finn, especially with this new character on the scene. Without giving away too much, I'll say that Finn is also brave, loyal to those he cares for, and determined to do the right thing. I think he is also a great role model. I found him to be probably the most engaging character of the film. Finn makes a great and wearable Star Wars name for a new generation. The name Finn also has a long history Ian Ireland that someone considering this name would want to read through.
