I'm totally late on this! We've been super busy at our house preparing to host kids from Ukraine this this summer. Now that a lot of that prep-work is done, though, I wanted to take some time to analyze this list with you and compare the predictions I made back in December with the real thing. There aren't as many changes as I had hoped there would be, but there are a few I'd like to discuss with you today! I'd also like to talk about how my top ten predictions from December match up to the real this!
What a great list! Now, compare it to the 2014 top ten list:
The main changes on the boys side were that James (which was new to the top ten in 2014) moved up two spots, Michael moved down two spots, and Benjamin replaced Daniel as the #10 name. For the girls. The girls list shifted a little more than the boys lit did. The changes to the girls list were that Ava, Abigail, and Charlotte all went up a spot, Isabella, and Emily went down a spot, Madison left the top 10, and Harper entered the top 10 for the first time!
Now let's compare that to the predictions I made in December. This part is fun for me!
Where I was right: All the names I predicted were in the top 10! The name I predicted would leave the top 10 (Daniel) did and the name I predicted would enter the top 10 (Benjamin) did. Noah, Liam, Mason, Michael and Benjamin were all in the spot I predicted they would be.
Where I was wrong: I predicted that William would go up but it stayed at #5. I predicted Alexander would go up but it actually went down. I predicted that Jacob would go down but it stayed the same. I predicted that Ethan would go down but it stayed the same too. I predicted that James would go up one spot but it actually went up two!
Where I was right: All the names I predicted were in the top 10. The name I predicted would leave the top 10 (Madison) did and the name I predicted would enter the top 10 (Harper) did. Ava, Mia, and Harper are in the spots I predicted they would be.
Where I was wrong: I predicted that Olivia would be this years #1 name but Emma held on for a second year in a row! While I prefer Emma to Olivia, I was really hoping my prediction would b right on this one. I predicted that Isabella would go up a spot and Sophia would go down several but Sophia stayed at #3 and Isabella went down two spots. I predicted that Abigail would go down a spot but it went up a spot instead. I predicted that Emily would stay the same but it went down a spot. I predicted that last year's newcomer would go up two spots but it only went up one.
Favorites and least favorites:
My favorite name on the boys list is definitely James! Despite its mega-popularity across centuries, I'm never disappointed by the name James! It's just so handsome! My next favorite is probably Ethan. I love the meaning "steadfast". I should also mention that Noah was my #2 name for a long time about a decade ago.
My least favorite name on the boys list is Mason. It's not a bad name, but I personally don't connect with it.
My favorite name on the girls list is Abigail. It was my favorite girls name up until about a year ago when I decided that it was just too popular for me to want to use in the first name spot, so I moved it to the middle name spot. Abigail is my favorite woman in the Bible. My next favorite name on the 2015 top 10 girls list is the newcomer Harper. I had this name on my list about a decade ago and I still think it's pretty cute, although arguably the trendiest name on this list.
My least favorite girls name on this list is probably Ava. It's just not my style, personally.
So, all in all, I like the 2015 top 10 lists. They are all solid names and mostly classics. I don't feel like any of them are super dated or overly trendy (although, if you want to avoid trendy names entirely, I'd stay out of the top 10). I can't wait to see what changes we'll see on the 2016 list!
